The Ballet of the Greek National Opera travels to Nafplion for this year’s opening performance of its summer tour. The soloists, the principal dancers and the corps de ballet of GNO invite the audience at the wide and welcoming Arvanitia square for an evening of voyages through totally different places and times.

George Gerswin: “Suite from PORGY AND BESS “

The Nafplion Festival Ensemble will be presenting the particularly demanding Mendelssohn’s sextet as well as the orchestral suite from the opera “Porgy and Bess” – an artistic triumph, both by musical and human standards, full of anti-racist meanings, composed by George Gershwin. The acclaimed violinist and artistic director of the Festival of Cyclades Yannos Margaziotis, the principle double bass of the Greek National Opera Vassilis Papavasileiou, the principle violinist of the Athens State Orchestra Appolon Grammatikopoulos, encounter the holder of the “Richard Wagner” scholarship Ai Motohashi, the soloist of the Odense Symphonic Orchestra Rafael Altino, the cellist of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra Jaani Helander and a prominent figure of the clarinet, the world renowned Frenchman Michel Lethiec -a night where the collaboration of Greek and foreign musicians is impressive at the least.

Born in 1983, Vassilis Varvaressos was the youngest winner of the Young Concert Artists competition in New York at the age of 14. That event was only the beginning of many distinctions for him and his career that reached its peak in 2012: a recital in Carnegie Hall, so successful that the U.S.A president himself invited him to play at the White House. The acclaimed Greek soloist will give the first concert of the week in the historic building of Vouleftiko with a program that balances between baroque, classical, romantic and impressionistic sounds. Presenting the audience with an experience as described in the New York Concert Review: “Varvaresos not only has a natural yet finely honed technique, it springs as one with the wide scope of profound musicianship”.

Angelica Cathariou who was performed at some of the most prestigious concert venues and festivals -like the Carnegie Hall and Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, meets one of the most famous Greek conductors. This time not conducting -as usually- but being the pianist of the concert. Nikos Athinaios, the first ever artistic manager of the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, after a great career both in Greece and especially abroad, has devoted himself to composing. A small sample of his work will be presented, among works by Weil, Stravinsky, Montsalvatge that will liven up memories of the 20th century through the voice of the distinguished mezzo.

The musicians of the SUONO brass ensemble, all of the distinguished in their fields and originating from symphony orchestras, found each other at their deep need for a high level of music. After a long series of many concerts around Greece -and after rave reviews for their performances- the members of the ensemble have set a basic goal: to familiarize the public with the sound of brass. At the imposing castle of Palamidi, the night will be full of their distinctive sound and of a cinematic atmosphere created by famous soundtracks thus evoking important (music) moments of the art of cinema.
